Our Security Tax Dollars at "Work"

Hers:
I’m appalled. And not because my flight back into Newark is delayed by an hour (that I know of so far) … there is a nor’easter I’ll be flying into.

No, I just witnessed an act of apathy and/or malice.

A woman who works at the Ft. Lauderdale airport (where I am sitting, waiting) spotted something suspect leaning against a column, right next to a garbage can. “Is this yours?” she asked in a low voice to no one in particular. Then she waved over some security guys who happened to be strolling by.

They, too, looked at the strange object, looked around, then picked it up. Did they call in bomb-sniffing dogs? Clear the area? No. They stuffed the unidentified object – a large white teddy bear with a heart in its hand – into the garbage can it was leaning against. Then laughed.

Okay, so it may not have been a matter of national security. But more than likely it was a matter of security to some poor kid who will never know what happened to his/her lovey.

Blessing – guess what? They just announced that my flight isn’t delayed! (though I won’t be surprised if we sit on the runway for several hours)
